Child labor standards addressing hours limitations, authorized employment service types, workplace conditions, and minimum wage requirements applicable to minors under eighteen are defined at both the State and Federal level. In Kansas a child must be at least fourteen years of age to be authorized for employment. For those employers covered by the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA encompasses most employers) a child can work between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. Hours are extended until 9:00 p.m. during the period from June 1st through Labor Day. Children under age eighteen are not allowed to work in hazardous occupations, which are defined the same at the state and federal level. Children under age sixteen can work up to 3 hours/day, 18 hours/week during a school week and 8 hours/day, 40 hours/week during a non-school week.

Kansas Administrative Regulation 49-1-70 specifies prohibited occupations for fourteen and fifteen year old minors in any other place of employment. The Kansas Department of Labor has issued a "Child Labor - Hours Notification" Poster that states work hour limitations, workplace restrictions, and work permit requirements for children under sixteen years of age. Every organization not covered under Federal Child Labor laws and employing children under sixteen years of age is required to display the poster in a conspicuous location near the principal entrance.
